Trivial
Proof, as if any is needed, of how very shallow and trivial I am:
Every time I see this banner around town:
I read it one of two ways without stopping to think.
1. In English, as “Laid SF”.
2. In French, as, well, “Laid SF” (“Laid” is French for “ugly”. Doesn’t everything sound better in French?).
It’s an important cause, and I happen to be sponsoring someone who’s riding in it, but I can’t help but wonder if I’m the only one who reads the banners that way.

I read it as LaidSF as well, is it a ride for AIDS??? Because I still don’t get it…
I also read it in both of your versions – before I read the end of the post.
I haven’t read it as Laid SF. That cracks me up. Part of the reason I haven’t read it as such though has been the whole controversy surrounding the California AIDS Ride and the LA AIDS SF ride, both of which are very expensive ways to try and make money for people living with HIV/AIDS in the first place even before they were court battling it out and trying to compete with one another. The whole thing actually just leaves a real bad taste in my mouth. If people want to ride their bikes from SF to LA, more power to em. But if we want our $$$ to support HIV/AIDS services this isn’t a way I personally could support anymore.
