Recycling

Lately I have changed my magazine recycling method. I used to recycle them along with all the rest of the paper (and it’s surprising how much recycling two people and four cats can create in just one week), but lately I have begun to give them away instead.

My old friend Peter gets my used New Yorkers, and never complains even when they have had champagne spilled on them and are otherwise worse for wear (especially after being on a long flight). At the other end of the country and the other end of the sophistication scale, he will also get the Beacon, the local paper from where my brother and sister live, when I have finished reading it. My sis bought me a subscription for Christmas and it was one of the best presents I received. What could be more fun than reading the police blotter and what the middle school kids are having for lunch? It’s amazing what goes on in such a small town.

Colin is getting my previously enjoyed Dwell and Paris Notes, since we share interests in architecture and travel. And besides, he mailed me a copy of Vero Beach magazine, so I can see how the other (wealthy) half lives.

Mom gets Sunset after I have read it, and I bought her a subscription to The Sun this year. Lots of sunshine! I also give my sister Megan, a dedicated gardener, Garden Design, and I give my aunt/godmother her own subscription to the New Yorker every year.

The one I never give away is Found. It is, as its name suggests, made up of notes, letters, photos and other found objects, revealing human nature in all its flaws, beauty, absurdity, joy, pain, and just plain weirdness, and it’s too good to give away, so go and get your own.

Found magazine is fascinating – I’m so glad you mentioned it here, I would never have known about it otherwise!

  2. Candi Says:

It does sound fascinating, but jeebus, what’s with the $5 per issue?

  3. Colin Says:

Yea, that Found magazine is awesome! I’ve never seen anything like that, but I’m with Candi — $5 bucks an issue is a little hefty, especially for 6 to 8 weeks delivery. Does it really take that long?

Vero Beach Magazine is pretty expensive too though, but my mom buys ‘em all the time. They give away the really old issues though, in some places.
