I’ve been really interested in Britain and the way they do things, but as hard as i’m trying, i can’t figure this out. Don’t think i’m stupid, i just… don’t know. I take American history, and unfortunately, it’s STRICTLY the U.S. If we mentioned Britain it’d be a sin.
But if the woman who just died, the Queen Mother, is the Queen Mother, why isn’t she Queen? Why is she not the one sitting on the throne?

The Queen Mother was married to the present Queen’s father, King George VI. When George was crowned King, his wife was crowned Queen Consort, meaning that she was simply the reigning monarch’s spouse and not the actual reigning monarch.
When her husband died, his wife did not become Queen. His eldest child became Queen, and that made George VI’s widow the Queen Mother, since she was the mother of the reigning Queen.
When the present Queen dies, her son Charles will become King, not her husband. It’s the line of succession: the ruling monarch’s eldest child inherits the throne. Prince William is next in line after Prince Charles, his father.
Does that make sense? Probably more than anyone wanted to know about that!
